Day Shift, Dead Hand, Deuces, Dice Boat,

The casino glossary is a useful tool for those people who are not familiar with the language used in casino's there are lots of terms that although they have an every day meaning within a casino they can sometimes mean something totally different.

Day Shift - casino work shift that usually works from 10am - 6pm

Dead Hand - a discarded hand in poker, in blackjack or baccarat a hand that is declared dead due to a dealers mistake.

Dead Table - A game that is staffed by dealers and open for business but has no players.

Deuces - Side of a Dice with two spots or two in a deck of cards

Deuces Wild - A form of video poker in which all the deuces are wild cards

Dice Boat - This is the tray at the craps table that holds the dice.

Discard Rack - the holder for cards that have already been played at a blackjack table.

Dime - A $100 bet.

Do Bet - any bet at the craps table that favours the shooter over the house same as the right bet.

Don't Bet - opposite of the do bet this is any bet at craps that favours the house over the shooter same as the wrong bet.

Casino Glossary D to E

Double Down - the act of making a second bet on a player's hand at blackjack equal to, or less than, than the original bet that gives the player only one more card.

Double Exposure Blackjack - A blackjack game in which the dealer turns both of his/her cards up aka See-Thru Blackjack + other names

Double Odds - the option of making free odds twice as much as a player's line bet.

Draw - In video poker to receive new cards, in blackjack or baccarat to call for more cards Drop - The amount of the total money and markers bet at a gaming table

Drop Box - The area of any gaming table where the cash is deposited.

Dumping - When a dealer is losing consistently and the players are winning a substantial amount of money

Early Surrender - an option at blackjack where the player could forfeit half his bet even if the dealer had a blackjack.

Easy Way - the numbers four, six, eight and ten made in craps without doubles

Edge - The advantage enjoyed mostly by the casino and sometimes by the players

En Prison - A French option in roulette when a '0' appears, where an even money bet is held over to the next roll rather than lost.

Even Up - a bet that mathematically favours neither side

Even Money - A bet that pays out at 1-1

Exposed Card - a card accidentally turned over during the course of play

Glossary F to I

Face Cards, First Base, Hold, Holde em,. house advantage, inside straight,

Face Cards - King, Queen and Jacks in cards also known as picture cards

False Cut - when cards are cut but are left in the same order.

First Base - the seat immediately to the left of the dealers position who is the first to receive cards.

Flat Bet - a bet that is paid off at even money, a player who bets the same amount every wager.

Floater - a roulette ball that gets hung on the wheel slowly revolving without dropping.

Floating Paddle - When the casino takes that much cash the paddle used to push the cash into the drop box won't go all the way down.

Floorman - Casino supervisor.

Fold - in poker to drop out of play

Four Flush - four cards to a flush in poker.

Four of a Kind - four cards of the same value.

Free Odds - a wager on the point in craps that can be made by anybody with a point bet and that is paid at true odds.

French Wheel - a roulette wheel with only one '0'

Freeze Out - To refuse to take bets and force a gambler out of the game.

Front Line - the space on a craps table where players can make a bet that the shooter will make his point the same as the pass line.

Full House - a hand consisting of three cards of the same ranking and a pair. i.e three Aces and Two Kings

Full Odds - the maximum amount fo free odds allowed at the craps table.

Fun Book - a book of coupons used by casino's to attract customers

Fund - the amount a player brings to the casino to gamble with aka bankroll.

Gaffed - rigged gaming equipment.

Gambling Stake - the amount reserved for gambling see Fund

George - A good tipper

Ghost - a stop on a slot machine reel that is blank

Graveyard Shift - The work shift in a casino that works from 2am to 10am

Greens - $25 valued chips

Grifter - a scam or con man

Grind - small money bettor, a gambling system that requires a long time to play for small rewards

Grind Joint - Casinos that cater to the small money gamblers

Hard Hand - blackjack term relating to any hand that does not contain an Ace counted as 11

Hard Way - In craps a total of fours, six, eight or ten only using pairs.

Head to Head - To play against the dealer with no other players, aka heads up.

Heat - surveillance by a casino of a suspected card counter or a cheater, also pressure on card counter to leave.

Heel a Bet - putting bets in the same square and off setting chips to reveal the chips underneath. sometimes indicates two separate bets other times used to reveal higher denomination chips under a stack.

High Card - Jack or Better

High Hand - One or two hands in pai gow or pai gow poker

High Roller - a high stakes gambler

Hit - to receive an additional card in blackjack

Hold - the amount of money retained by the casino after all bets are paid

Hold'em - a form of poker

Hole Card - second card of the dealer's hand in which he deals to himself face down.

Hot - a player on a winning streak, also refers to cards, dice or table where players are winning a lot.

House Advantage - mathematical advantage or edge the casino enjoys on every game and bet aka PC

House Odds - the ratio at which a casino pays off a winning bet, these are set by the casino.

House Dealer - a casino employee who's only concern is the casino's bottom line or one who enjoys seeing players lose.

Hustler - a cheat who tries to coax money out of unsuspecting players.

Inside Straight - a hand that can only be made by drawing one card. e.g. drawing a ten to an hand of 7,8,9,J

Insurance - a side wager at blackjack made when the dealer is showing an Ace in which the player bets that the dealer is holding a natural blackjack.
