The casino glossary is a useful tool for those people who are not familiar with the language used in casino's there are lots of terms that although they have an every day meaning within a casino they can sometimes mean something totally different.

Quarters - Green $25 chips

Rail - the high padded walls on the craps table, also the wall or railing surrounding a baccarat pit

Rail Bird - a thief who sneaks chips from in front of players on the craps table

Raise - to increase the amount of a previous bet at poker

Rake - the commission a poker room charges on each pot in a poker game

Rating - the evaluation of a players gambling action

Rating Card - the device used to rate players

Reds - $5 casino chips

Reels - One of the loops inside the slot machine that spins round

Reel Strips - the series of symbols wrapped around a cylinder inside a slot machine that designate a winner

Reel Window - The glass display through which the players view the reels

Respin - When the clapper on the Big Six Wheel gets hung up and doesn't land clearly on one number

RFB - players privileges that allow them to claim room food and beverages

Rich Deck - when the remaining cards in the deck are favourable to the player in a blackjack game

Roll The Bones - shoot the dice

Royal Flush - the best possible hand in poker it comprised ten, jack, queen, king ace all of the same suit.

Run the Shoe - when a baccarat player maintains control of the shoe by winning a series of banker bets until all the cards have been dealt

Ruin - losing all your money

Rush - a quick winning streak

Scared Money, Second Screen, Section Shooter, Send It In, Seven Out,

Scared Money - money a player can't afford to lose

Second Screen - when a slot machine player reaches the bonus round of slot play and has a chance to add to an initial jackpot

Section Shooter - a roulette dealer who tries to hit certain areas of the wheel

Section Slicing - dividing a roulette wheel into sections to discover if any section is hitting more than others

Send It In - Make a large bet

Seven Out - when a shooter at craps loses by rolling a seven before repeating his point

Shaker - the container holding the dice at pai gow sic bo or pai gow poker.

Shield - the glass around the roulette wheel that prevents punters from touching the wheel

Shift Boss - the casino executive in charge of a designated shift

Shill - a casino employee who poses as a player in order to get more players involved at a dead or slow table

Shoe - the box that holds the cards in various games

Shoot - to roll the dice

Shooter - the person who rolls the dice

Short Odds - receiving less than the true payout of the bet

Short Term - the theory that since the casino has a an advantage over the long term, the player can win in the short term

Showdown - in poker the final betting followed by the comparison of the remaining players hands.

Shuffle Up - a tactic aimed at card counters the dealer will shuffle sometimes after every hand

Side Bet - a second bet in addition to the primary bet on a propisition at a table game

Side Pot - a group of bets at poker in addition to the main pot

Single Deck Blackjack - a blackjack game that uses only one deck

Sleeper - a bet at the craps table that the player has forgotten about or even left the table without collecting

Slot Floor - the area of the casino where the slot machines are located

Slot Mix - the designation of the mixture of loose and tight machines, different denominations and slot versus video gaming machines

Slug - a group of cards inserted into a blackjack deck in an order already known to a dishonest player. also a piece of round metal that when inserted into a slot machine imitates a card

Snake Eyes - the total of two on the craps table

Snapper - slang for a natural blackjack

Soft Hand - a blackjack hand in which an ace is counted as one

Split - to divide one hand with two identical cards into two hands at the blackjack table

Spooking - the skill of discovering the dealers hole card in blackjack, a spook is a player who gets that information and passes it on to his fellow players

Spread - the difference between the minimum and maximum bets of a player

Stack - a group of 20 chips especially with special roulette chips

Stacked Deck - a deck whose cards have been prearranged

Stand - to decline any additional cards at the blackjack table

Steaming - a gambler playing recklessly in order to recoup his losses

Stick - the device used at craps table to move the dice around the table

Stickman - the dealer who announces the rolls at the craps table and passes the dice to the shooter

Stiff - a blackjack hand that might break if you take a hit, but isn't good enough to be a pat hand. A player who doesn't tip the cocktail waitress or dealer

Stops - the number of points where a slot machine reel might become motionless.

Straight - five cards in sequence

Straight Flush - five cards in sequence in suit

Straight Slots - slot machines that have payouts that are fixed and unchanging

Stuck - to lose or to be losing money to the house

Surrender - an option at blackjack where the player can give up half his bet before drawing any cards

Sweat - a casino exec or player who worries about losing

Swing Shift - a casino work shift that runs from 6pm to 2am

System - a way to gamble that will help the gambler to succeed

Take Down - to recall a bet before a decision is made

Taking Odds - taking free odds behind the pass line or a come bet

Tapped Out - losing all your money

Tell - an unconscious signal that a blackjack dealer communicates to players about the value of his/her hole card. In poker an inadvertent signal that lets other players know what the strength of your hand is.

Three Flush - three cards to a flush

Three of a Kind - a hand that has three cards of the same value

Third Base - the position farthest to the right of the dealer, the last player to act on his hand before the dealer

Tight Machine - a slot machine that returns a low percentage of the money played on that machine

Take - a tip or gratuity

Take Hustler - a dealer, waiter or waitress who aggressively encourages players to tip

Tom - casino slang for a poor tipper

Triple Odds - free odds of three times the amount of the player's pass line or come bets

Triple Play Video Poker - a video poker gmae that allows a player to bet on three hands on one screen, comes in versions of upto 100 hands on one screen

True Odds - the actual likelihood of any event happening

Two Pair - a hand consisting of two separate pairs

Underground Joint - an illegal casino

Up Card - the first card of a blackjack dealer's hand

Vic - casino slang for sucker or victim

Video Keno - an electronic slot machine that mimics a live keno game, a keno card appears on the screen and the player picks ten numbers. The machines random number generator then picks 20 numbers.

Video Blackjack - an electronic slot machine that plays a game similar to live poker, but with significant differences

Video Poker - an electronic slot machine that plays a game similiar to live poker but with significant differences

Video Slots - an electronic slot machine that is identical to 'reel' slot machines, except that the screen reproduces the reels

Vig or Vigorish - the five per cent commission that the casino charges for various casino bets the same as juice
